The President's Cup History (updated from 2015)

The Cup has been going since 1988. That means next year's will be the 30th running.

The course is set by the Club President (or delegate). There are no set rules other than for it to be enjoyable. The cups are crafted by Jitka Kopriva.

Another Concord Sydney Summer Series Sewn Up - The Old Gas Works

The Sydney Summer Series (aka Wednesday evening orienteering) events are big these days. A little rain before the event may have kept some folks at home. They missed another great event, set by Matt Peters.

No rain, challenging route choice and navigation, not too much in the way of hills, and harbour views.  What more could we ask for?

Well, there was also a baby to cuddle. Charlotte is learning that being passed around among orienteers could actually be a good thing.

Oh, and a note for newer members who may think all the helper jobs require walking and standing. Gayle lounged by the Start flag - it was a necessary responsibility.

Christmas Party and the President's Cup

It's a busy time of year but the Uringa Christmas Party is one not to be missed (acknowledging the conflict of birthday parties, other Christmas parties, sporting events and the like). The club thanks its members with a barbecue (drinks, salads and desserts brought by those who attend), Santa Claus and the President's Cup.

Helen and Matt Peters again generously offered their home as the venue along with their close connection to St. Joseph's College.




The 2017 President's Cup set by Jim Mackay proved challenging in more ways than one. 

First was the weather. After a slight rain delay most took to the streets in a gently falling summer rain. (Note that some preferred to relax in front of the cricket instead.)

Second were the questions for each control site: some required closer observation than expected. Everyone did get #23 Message from the church to all orienteers (sign): 'Where do you think we are going' though they might not have been able to answer the question.

 And third was, well, the results of the weather. The questions were printed on the back of the map. A plastic sleeve is little help in the rain when you are trying to write the answers on the back of the map. The outcome was a very good practice at map memory for many of the runners.

 There was a baby to cuddle (getting to be a standard part of a Uringa event again), and a lot to talk about as everyone tucked into to the as usual sumptuous meal. The barbecue chefs were Nick and Aldo.

The clanging of a bell announced the arrival of Santa Claus.

Then it was time for awarding of the President's Cup. Jitka makes the cups for the club's annual presentation. They were presented by Matt on behalf of Jim to Dave, Zoe and Maggie.

Year End Awards - NSW Orienteers of the Year

NSW Orienteer of the Year (OY) awards are presented to the top three in each age class at the end of the NSW State League season. The awards are not limited to NSW orienteers and some outstanding orienteers from out of state have run in many SL events this year, impacting on the end of year standing of NSW orienteers.

Year end awards -Orienteering Australia Merit Badges

The aims of the Badge Scheme are to recognise the achievements of a consistent orienteering standard relative to one’s age-group peers and to be a fund raising activity for Australian Teams to World Championships. 

Thirty-two Uringans were eligible for these badges this year end. (If you still live in Australia and did not receive yours at the Christmas party, ask Mary Jane Mahony for it at one of the next events. Badges earned by members who have now relocated will sent on somehow.)

Participants in nominated events earn credits over a 2 year period.  Three credits earn an OA merit badge.

Nominated events include National Championships; the Easter 3-Day event; the 6 State Championship events; plus 2 additional events in each state nominated by that state, usually (though not always) the Middle and Sprint distance Championships.

Nominated Orienteering Australia controlled badge events shall be limited to two (minimum) up to 4 (maximum) per calendar year in each state. States are encouraged to nominate both Middle Distance and Sprint races as badge events.

Sunny State League 15 Sprint Supports Bandaged Bear

Pymble Ladies College was the site of a flourishing completion of the 2017 NSW State League Orienteering Series.

Sunshine on the green, a party atmosphere and good orienteering made it an enjoyable morning out. On top of this the event was a fund-raiser for Westmead Hospital's Bandaged Bear Appeal.

The orienteering was technically challenging on a complex map with excellent course setting offering route choice, change of direction, and occasional plain 'where am I' confusion due to levels, corners and overhangs.

Uringans were well represented on the podium.

MetroLeague awards were also presented. Uringa's winning team was rather under-represented at the presentation, but Serena Doyle (team and individual) and Gayle Shepherd did their best.
