Yearly orienteering migration to Europe

While our members Alison and Chris have already been in Ireland since April (and will be living there for a couple of years), others are joining in the yearly migration to various parts of the Northern Hemisphere for some orienteering, sightseeing and whatever else.

Maureen and Dick's names appear on the start list for the Kainuu week which is incorporated into the World Orienteering Championships; these Champs are starting next week and the event centre is in Vuokatti, Central Finland. They will be cheering on the Aussies as they compete at this important event; unfortunately Australia's strongest competitor Julian Dent is out due to a stress fracture. The Ogilvie's will also be travelling to O-Ringen, for this 5 Day event in Lappland, then it's all the way down to Sestriere (Piemont Region, nearest city is Turin) for the World Masters Orienteering Championships in which Maureen has medalled several times of the past years. Not quite sure where they are going to from there, but Maureen and Dick are known for their extended stays in Europe and competing in as many events as possible!

Ron and Gayle are just sticking to the one week of orienteering at the World Masters in Sestriere, and will then be travelling a bit around Italy, Austria and Switzerland for some R&R. I dare say they will need that R&R, as the events will be in some tough alpine terrain at altitude!

Aldo and myself are heading to Switzerland and Ireland, with our choice for some orienteering falling on Croatia. We will be competing in the Croatia Open (5 Day event) in about 3 weeks time and we are expecting some challenging orienteering in karst terrain, but also a great sprint event on the holiday island of Krk. Watch this space......

Hope the remainder of the winter isn't too bad and too cold for everyone staying back in Australia. Ciao for now !!
