Some like to do it in the darK

For some there is not enough challenge in a normal orienteering event- so they wait until the sun goes down, strap on a battery powered version and off they go into the darkness.

Well this hardy bunch of darkness loving orienteers did pretty well.

Fast moving orienteers seen from Mt Stromlo Observatory

Perhaps the best thing about night orienteering is the light source debate.
having run many times at night I gave up after a particular tough event and I struggled to see using my penlight torch. I was standing in a gully searching high and low when over the ridge came what could only be described as a scene from a horror story. You know the eerie light scene. As the gully brightened and the true nature and control was illuminated I realised that without a 50000 Watt headlight I wasn't in the hunt. I retired my pen light torch, thought seriously about upgrading to a trusty dolphin. I will return to night orienteering when they run the event not in age classes but in wattage classes!

Congratulations Ron

During the presentation at the Easter 3 Day, Ron was awarded the inaugural David Hogg medal for Services to Event Managment !!! Congratulations on this award which is indeed very well deserved.

Of course all Uringans know how much Ron puts into orienteering; but this award recognised Ron in particular for his role as Event Director for JWOC 2007 and the Easter Carnival 2008 in Dubbo as well as for his continued leadership in the use of the SportIdent timing system in NSW.

There you go, Mr Orienteering and Mr SportIdent - one big mega star for Ron !!

Uringa Club Victory (well sort of)

As part of the Austraian 3 days a Champion Club was announced. Almost without exception it is a home club that wins due to the weight of participants from that club. ALT dominated the Club pointscore with 132 points. POA was next with 90 points. Uringa scored 6th on the table but more importantly we were in 1st place when compared with other NSW Clubs. (Newcastle were 10 points behind us.)
Well done to all our runners

More from Tasmania

Well the Tour of Tassie moved on to events 6, 7 and 8 .

Event 6 was held at Verwood. Whilst it was a minor event the competition was just as fierce.

Dave Lotty was 9th on Course 2 and Dick Ogilvie 13th on the same course. Maureen Ogilvie was 13th on Course 3.

Event 7 was a sprint event held in the grounds of UTAS in Launceston.

Dave Lotty placed 3rd in M60, Maureen Ogilvie was 3rd in W75 and Dick Ogilvie was 5th in M65

Event 8 was held at Lively's Bog near St Helens. Maureen Ogilvie continued her great form for a win in W75 and Dick Placed 8th in M65. The winning times looked a little on the slow side and perhaps suggest that the courses may have been a little long / tough or too boggy. Pity Terry Murphy wasn't there as he would have been sure to find out one way or the other for us.

Australian 3 Days in Tasmania

25 Uringans plus adopted Swiss orienteer Brigit travelled to Launceston to participate in the 3 days.

The 3 days were run on very different terrain with day 1 being extremely boggy (hate to have experienced it after 3 years of rain as opposed to 3 years of dry) day 2 with lots of timber on the ground and day 3 a wonderful mix of tin mining, gully spur and some great rock.

It was a fair test for all orienteers.

Terry Murphy won the prize for the "most bogged" orienteer when he stepped into a rather shallow looking creek and ended waist deep in mud. Nick Wilmott on the other hand ran the bog day in a new pair of shoes and could have returned them in "as new" condition when he crossed the finish line.

Returning from injury and travel Bronwyn Steele ran very very well in W17-20E to finish 7th. When you consider the lack of training and competition over the past 2 years it was outstanding.

The competitions were held in fantastic running weather with clear skies each day and temperatures just broaching the 20s

All up Uringans nothched up 4 1st places: Helen Murphy, Maureen Ogilvie, Dave McKenna and Brigit Zemp (Swiss import)

Linda Sesta, Nick Wilmott, Rick Steele and Jane McKenna also stood on the dias in 2nd and Georgia Jones competing in W12 secured 3rd place.

Results.
Bronwyn Steele W17-20E 7th
Ian Jones M40 8th

Georgia Jones W12A 3rd
Brigit Zemp W17-20A 1st

Once the dust finally cleared it was good to look back and feel that whilst the terrain was not the most intricate nor detailed; nor the thickest or clearest; it had been a great 3 days.

2010 ACT here we come!

Fashion Police ban Headband

In an unusual move Tasmanian Orienteering Authorities stepped in to ban Sarah Garnet from wearing a headband at the third day of the Austrlian 3 days. A Noted Fashion Police "supergrass" was heard to say that the wearing of a green headband whilst wearing a blue and red o-suit was not fashionably correct.

Judge for your self.

Uringa Food Lovers Guide

Degustation for this banana bread took place at the Centennial Park event and is now available to all Uringans by popular request! It is really very, very yummy.....

Banana Bread

2 cups self-raising wholemeal flour
1/2 cup maple syrup
4-5 ripe bananas mashed
1/4 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp melted butter
1/2 cup milk
a pinch of salt & cinnamon
Option: 1/2 cup of blueberries, raspberries or walnuts

Sift flour into bowl. Add cinnamon, salt and baking powder.
In another bowl mash the bananas together, add the milk, butter, maple syrup and mix into a mush.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mix.
Put into loaf tin, be sure to grease it first with some butter and bake at 180 degrees C for about 45 to 55 minutes, until the top has peaked and brown.
Enjoy !!!!
