Sydney Sprint Weekend

It is not often that we get the chance to compete in 2 State League Events right on your doorstep
The Sydney Sprints weekend commenced bright and early on Saturday morning in the scenic grounds of Sydney University.
The run at Syd Uni started with a NOL 4 person relay 2 boys / 2 girls in each team
Catherine Murphy had a great run and her team finished 2nd overall. Also running NOL were 3 of Uringa's up and coming juniors. Georgia Jones, Sophie Jones and Finn MacKay. These 4 Uringans did really well especially Finn and Sophie who were competing well above their normal classes. Unfortunately for both Georgia and Finn other members in their teams mis-punched whilst Sophie's team finished a very credible 14th place.
After the NOL Relay a 2 person relay was on for the non NOL runners. Fastest home from Uringa was the team of Ant and Jim in 9th place. in 18th was Linda and Karen Blatchford. Maggie Jones, running with Hilary Wood finished in 31st and Lisa running with Sue Key was in 39th place. Ian ran in a relay but unfortunately I cannot find his team result.

Relay individual results.

Moving a few kilometres south and a world apart as far as terrain goes brought runners to Sir Joseph banks Park. This area has a very interesting history as a zoo, garden, athletics venue and now orienteering. Course Planner Matt Peters certainly set some very interesting legs in the fast park lands and complex sand dunes
This was a Uringa event and a large workforce descended on the park to set up for the event. As well as running the event Uringa has a connection with Zonta and a cake stall was a feature of the food consumption of the day.
2 X 1st placing's, 6 X 2nd and 4 X 3rd was a great result. Well done to Jakob Doyle who is showing sound improvement in his performances in recent times. New to orienteering Regina and veteran orienteer Helen finished in 2nd. Jim and Ant continued their fine relay form in notching 1st positions. There are many photos of the area on facebook both Uringa and ONSW pages which highlighted the picturesque nature of the park
Packing up was fantastic and the gear trailer was in the driveway just after 7 ( would have been earlier but a stop for two of life's essentials milk and beer slowed us down.

Sunday saw us once more in the hallowed halls of learning. this time University of New South Wales. This was indeed the first ever orienteering race in the grounds and boy oh boy you certainly had to maintain map contact as the map was very intense.
Brian, Helen and Jim were on the victory podium and in 2nd was Mary Jane, Linda, Penny and Shane. Finn and Ant were 3rd placegetters.
Our elites Georgia 5th in W20E, Lawrence 16th in M20E and Alice 24th in W21E and Matt 34th in M21E all did well. Sprints are all about seconds a minute covers 10 places at times.
The coffee shop which was open certainly did a roaring trade.
