Sydney Sprint #8 Birchgrove
The very scenic Ballast Point Park, the old oil refinery at Birchgrove was a bonus for all competitors in the Sydney Sprint Series event number 8.
The course was set by Lisa "the Doc" and she really made the runners work. The early part of the course saw competitors stretch out with a series of longer legs into the Mort Bay area. Then just as tiredness set in the competitors returned to the multi level Ballast Point Park where even the simplest control of the final 6 controls can be misread due to the complex nature of the area.
Following the event there was much discussion on the best route choice in that last complex area and of course the quickest was to the finish from the last control, the northern stairs of the southern stairs.
Overall there were 60 competitors and of these there were 8 Uringans.
Ron Garner was first home coming in 30th in 21.43 for the 2.6km course. Dick Ogilvie used a lot of local knowledge to come in in 41st place with a time of 27.57. Dick recounted tails of a memorable uni party in the house across the road from the assembly area.
Terry Murphy was next home at 41st in 29.10 and the very competitive Brian Cleland stormed home in 49th place with a time of 31.25.
Helen Murphy was the first of our ladies home in 35.04 to record 51st and hard on her heels was Mary Jane Mahony in 52nd position in a time of 35.4. Penny Field had a very good run to record 55th place in a time of 45.48 and returning after injury Angela Murray was not disgraced with a fine 56th place in 48.13.
All in all a great event and many thanks to Lisa for the course and Dave for helping put out controls and to the many Uringans who were able to help out.
That was the last of our Summer events and we move now to Callan Park on 21st April for a metro League event. Lots of helpers and runners will be needed on the day.

Permanent course in Centennial Park goes Live
After nearly two years of planning, organising, meetings, checking, building, signing etc, the Permanent Orienteering course in Centennial Park has now "opened". Kits are available at the Visitor Information Centre for $5.00.
For more information check out the Centennial Park website:
http://www.centennialparklands.com.au/activities/orienteering
Although it's been a long time coming, once you see the kit you will agree it was worth all the effort. I will be bringing a kit the AGM so you can see what it looks like; it's really very professional and well done - really fabulous work by the Graphic Design team at Centennial Park.

SWAMPED AGAIN
The report on the previous Uringa event at Snails Bay talked about being "swamped" with entries well the Uringa event at Sydney Park had us once more swamped again. Alas not with entries although 47 on this day was pretty darn good.
It was the weather that caused problems. Linda, Dave and Aldo braved the rain to put out the controls and one look at them upon their return proved that the courses was rather wet. Puddles here there and everywhere with very sloshy grass slopes made for interesting running. Mind you the park was looking rather dry and brown in the weeks leading up to the event.
The big issue with this event was how do you keep computers and paper work dry. Well an ingenious solution of sorts was found by utilising a bbq shelter (unfortunately the roof was not weather tight but that was a minor issue). The newly created tarpaulin fortification proved adequate and reduced the amount of gear that will need to be dried in the coming days. The raised floor was a god send as there was about 300mm of water lying below it.
The course set so well by Linda proved to be well received by the runners who braved the conditions.
Andrew Brown from Big Foot was first past the post in a sizzling 13.18 some 40 seconds clear of Greg Barbour and Andy Hill.
Matt Peters was the first Uringan home in 15th place and Maggie Jones was only a tick or two behind in 18th. Eric Charpentier finished in 24th and Mary Jane, wearing her best Crocs wet weather orienteering shoes finished in 41st with Maureen Ogilvie a fine 45th.
Well we are hoping we have now shaken the "Kev Curby" wet event curse as we head towards Lisa's sprint event back at Birchgrove on 4th March.
PS I do hope that some pictures follow as Linda's cute gum boots are a sight to see.
