Uringa wraps up 2020 MetrO League at Boggabilla Reserve (18 Oct)

Many things have changed since Uringa last hosted the MetrO League final at Bogabilla Reserve just over two years ago, but not the resilience and enthusiasm of the 185 volunteers and competitors who helped see the series to its conclusion. The local Baseball  Club was also a great help in providing shelter and the occasional snack.

Undeterred by the gloomy weather outlook or the risk of orienteering overload due to the COVID-induced log-jam in the event calendar, a bumper entry of 169 competitors from 12 different clubs turned up to tackle one of the seven challenging courses designed by Shane Doyle on a newly updated map.

Highlights included scenic water views, hilly trails and grassy meadows, plus the opportunity for a close encounter with some of the many species of friendly flora and fauna offering free acupuncture sessions!

Fortunately the forecast rain held off, much to the relief of the event crew who had braced themselves for a dousing; however, thanks to the humid conditions many attendees ended up drenched in sweat instead.

Fifteen Uringans flew the flag for the club in the MetrO League competition, graciously leaving the podium positions for guests from other clubs. The Uringa-Central Coast alliance fielded teams in Divisions 2, 4 and 5, and won their matches in Divisions 2 and 4.

Ant Nolan was first scorer for the UR-CC Harriers in Division 2, finishing in 9th place and covering the 5k course in a time of 50.57. He was followed by Linda Sesta (15th in 58.02), Simon Murphy (19th in 101.15), Serena Doyle (20th in 104.14) and Michael Warlters (22nd in 108.17).

First home for the UR-CC Kites in Division 4 was Nick Dent, who finished 7th in 44.04 over 3.8k, followed by David Christie (9th in 46.04), Robyn Pallas (11th in 47.03), Jim Mackay (13th in 48.24), Maggie Mackay (14th in 48.47), Melanie Christie (17th in 49.26) and Hilary Wood (26th in 59.14).

In Division 5, Julia Prudhoe was first scorer for the UR-CC Kestrels, completing the 3.3k course in 47.34 to finish in 7th place. She was followed by teammates Jonathan Nolan (10th in 49.48),   Dick Ogilvie (17th in 59.18), Dave Lotty (23rd in 1.13.04) and Mary Jane Mahony (25th in 1.16.32).

Competing as individuals in Division 1, Henry Orozco made his debut for the club and Ian McKenzie power-walked his way round the 6.4k course in a time of 1.33.

Full individual results are available on Eventor and the MetrO League results are on the Orienteering NSW site.
