Jones Family Farewell

Uringa does a very good party, and last night's farewell to Maggie, Ian, Georgia, Sophie, and Lawrence Jones was no exception. They return to the UK after several years in Australia.

Silva Award to Chris Wilmott at Australian 3 Days

Last weekend Chris Wilmott  was awarded the Silva Award for Services to Australian Orienteering for his significant contribution to mapping.

Chris Wilmott is these days actually a member of Illawarra-Kareelah Orienteers. He's a member of the orienteering Wilmott family (Nick his brother, Margaret, Ingrid are current members; John and Marie, the parents, are life members), and has been a member of Uringa in the past.

You will have seen Chris' name on many bush orienteering maps (or will when you eventually venture into the bush orienteering world).

What does it take to run a [very big] event?

Let's see...
Alex Davey, Wagga Wagga Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout, Ron Pallas

Liaison with landholders, city leaders, clubs, course planners, setters, controllers, technology providers, caterers, overall coordination, planning, communication...

Wagga Wagga is 5-6 hours drive from Sydney. The Waggaroos are a strong orienteering club but they couldn't do it alone. This was a multi-club event overseen by Event Directors Alex and Ron.

Catering, especially coffee, is right up there with good course setting and fine weather in importance. Catering by the NSW Junior Squad was particularly impressive.

Coffee vans from Wagga were clearly sweet-talked to come out on dirt roads to supply the caffeine needy.

Venue set up and take down ...

Overall control from the Finish tent.

And, of course, a Master of Ceremonies. Is that Ron again?

Australian 3-Days - the Results

The Australian 3-Days are usually held at Easter, but this year they were held over the NSW Queen's Birthday Weekend, because of the Oceania 2017 Championships held in New Zealand at that time. Got that?  (Next year the Australian 3-Days will be held at Easter time in Tasmania.)

Times for the three days are added together for the over all placings and awarding of badges. The three days comprised a long distance, a middle distance and a sprint.

Oh, oh. Doesn't look like he had a good run.

Where is he?

Georgia Jones appointed reserve on JWOC team

It's really old news, but you might have missed it.

Georgia Jones is the reserve female for Australia's 2017 Junior World Orienteering Championships, to be held in Tampere, Finland.
