Day 2 – Diesel and Dust Tour
Well a reduced travel time on dirt roads saw less dust
however cars in the parking area got a real red dust bath as people were
heading off. Fortunately tomorrow will see only a short drive on a well-made
road and no bull dust.
Mind you when you finally take off your shoes the dust has
well and truly infiltrated your o-shoes and socks.
So today was on the map called “Tundarri”. Best way to
describe it would be river flats with steep erosion and some tall hills in the
west. The Elite men had over 16 kms so it was fast and furious. The band of
vagueness protecting the finish was like a minefield of trickery and certainly
brought a few undone.
The area around the northern creek was fantastic and the
decision as to whether to go straight or run the river highway was debated long
and hard.
You may have noticed that Finn was a dnf on day 1. Well what
a saga it was. Finn was heading across country and up an incline when a runner
just ahead startled a kangaroo. Unfortunately for Finn the roo decided its best
line of escape was straight at Finn. He took the appropriate action- run and in
so doing managed to roll his ankle. Whilst he soldiered on for a couple more
controls he limped back to the finish with the best war story I have heard for
a long time but also with a dreaded dnf next to his name.
