Zombies take on Orienteers! Big Foot Sprints



The Men's first map

I am not sure whether it was the orienteers or those involved in “Zombies V Humans” who had the most fun at Sydney University on Saturday.

The sight of 200 heavily armed students would raise fear levels in some countries but the foam bullets appeared non-threatening. The blood curdling howls of zombies echoed through the hallowed grounds of the Uni- What fun they all appeared to be having as the squads of humans set out to hunt down the zombies

The Women's first map

Also hunting were the orienteers with around 150 competitors in the BigFoot Sprints. There were only two classes- men and Women and each competitor ran a qualifying race - Men on A Course and Women on B Course. After a short break round 2 was on with a chasing start on the reverse course.

I am not sure of everyone else, the chance to go orienteering in the Uni was the big attraction. The buildings and gardens are a mix of old and new, tasteful and tasteless.

The biggest winner on the days was MP and it was amazing to see just how many succumbed to MP. Just goes to show that sprints are fast and furious and not much time is given to being cautious.

Result wise Georgia was our top placed competitor finishing in 10th

Pyrmont Spring - State League Sprint

It was the perfect Sunday morning to be running in the city, and Pyrmont was top of the line. Views. Coffee. Views. Ups and downs. Views. Conversation. And a little running.

There was a choice of coffee shops.

Ron said his time was influenced by not having his running hat. Which hat was that?

The green Easter 2014 shirts were being modelled by Nick and Hillary.

Australian Middle Distance and Relay Champs



Middle Distance

The Middle Distance Champs were held just a few kilometres east of Bungendore on a windy Saturday. The map “The Gib” was just of one ridge line and was covered in granite ranging from great slabs of bare rock to huge boulders. The view from the ridge over Bungendore and also Lake George were spectacular.

Result wise for Uringa it was only the wily veteran Maureen who troubled the scorer with a fine 2^nd in W80A. Both Jared and Sophie missed 3^rd by a whisker. I should mention Gayle’s run her best of the year to finish in the top 10 in W55A.

 Australian Relays

Unfortunately the wind did not abate for the Australian Relays and I must say by the time the event wrapped up everyone had had enough. I guess a pointer to the fact that this is a windy area is the  a very large wind farm a few kilometres and a few paddocks away to the north. Bungendore does have some god points and it would seem that these would be found in the coffee shops.

Check out the first leg on the relay course - 1200 metres and a lot of contours. Go right, go left, go straight! In discussions around the result board it seemed that all 3 route choices were very similar.

The relays were state based teams and a number of Uringans were in podium placed teams. The results currently on line do not show all teams… strange

Result wise:

Sophie and Jared were in the winning M/W12A team and Ian Jones was in the 3^rd placed NSW team in M45A.

Lawrence Jones in M20E was 7^th and Georgia was 9^th in her W16A relay. Gayle’s W55a team finished a very credible 7^th place and Dick O’s M65A team were just a couple of minutes behind 3^rd place. Maureen and Dave were in a mixed relay team and were not disgraced finishing 7^th.
Linda and Maggie were in W45A however their team did not get a listing at all pity as they both had good runs. Similarly Ron was in a M55A team that finished but alas no result has made it onto the net. Jane McKenna’s W45A  team unfortunately had a mp (not Jane).

The next bush events are the Xmas 5 days based in Orange from 27-31^st December entries are now open.

There is , of course,  are the Summer events to keep us occupied until then!
