Australian 3 Days 2016- Canberra

The annual pilgrimage to the Australian 3 Days did not have to travel quite so fare with the event being held in and around Canberra. ( Mind you the traffic coming home made you wish that you were flying, not driving.)

As well as a goodly sized tribe from Uringa, we were joined by former Uringa members: Sybille, Matthais, Noel and Corsin Boos.  It is hard to believe that it was 7 years ago that the headed back to their home in Switzerland

Linda, Noel, Corsin, Sybille, Matthais, Aldo
The event kicked off with the Elite Sprint in the Canberra Uni campus. A really good finish area made for a good spectator environment. The campus had it all, complex buildings, multiple levels and a bit of bush thrown in.

Whilst no one stood on the podium there were some excellent results from Noel and  Georgia in particular.  Catherine Murphy was outstanding when you consider this was her first run against the nation’s best. Also great to see Alice, Matt and Cassius Westwood who have recently moved to Canberra. (There were some fights over who was to baby sit Cassius- it got ugly!)

After the elites had finish the peasants were deemed suitable enough to run the courses

Day 1- Isaacs Ridge

The first of the main competition days was held at Isaacs, a south western suburb, on the map “Isaacs Ridge”.  One glance of the map confirms the reason behind its name. The map had a lot of open areas which proved to be energy sapping as you crossed them, in some cases, many times under a clear sky and a rather hot sun. The run home as you zi-zag down the hill was trick but great fun.

It was a little soul destroying after leaving the start as you crossed paths with a stream of runners ( mmm walkers, trudgers)  heading up the hill. It didn't take long to realise that that would be you real soon.As can be seen from the results we had a 3 X First, 2 X 2nd and 1 X 3rd. Must mention it was a great to see Clare Murphy in the forest as well as Ian Bilmon  competing in his first ever Easter event.

Day 2 " The Murdering Shed"

Sunday saw a date with the Easter Bunny out near captains Flat. The map was delightfully named the “Murdering Shed” It would appear some sheep were caught in a bush fire. The area once had many small parcels of land and boasted a school. Around 1900, with the land being not profitable on a small scale landowners sold up and the school closed. The locals than had to ride a horse to nearby Captains Flat to attend school- 20kms or so.

8 Uringans managed major placings with Maureen doubling up in 1st from the previous day. Danielle was also very consistent notching a 3rd place despite a twisted ankle. Sybille dropped a place whilst Lisa had a very strong run to move up the leaders board.
There was a delightful piece of sisterly love. Sisters Zara and Serena came to the aid of Maree who had sustained a nasty cut on the leg. Zara helped Maree back to the finish where she learnt that any thoughts of becoming a "leg" model just bit the dust!

Day 3 Foxlow Flats

This was an apt name as there were a number of dead foxes on the road as you headed to the event.
The killer today was going to be the rather long traverse of the “button grass” on the way to the last control.
From our base on the hill many a spectacular fall was seen. None better that the double somersault with a twist completed by Lisa. Today was much faster than day 2 with less rock and more gully spur being the dominant feature.
With this being the final day there was a lot of pressure on runners to really nail a good run. Maureen once more scored a well-deserved 1st place.  Matthais returned to the winners circle ensuring a first place in the overall competition. Lisa was once more  well placed ( even with the spectacular fall) and Clare Murphy had a great run to come in in 3rd in W21A.
Special mention for Mary Jane's injury. When you face plant on a rock there is bound to be some blood and bruising- ouch!

It's a wrap

As the dust settled the organisers were busily beavering away packing up. The event does not run without volunteers and for that matter all events depend so heavily on the efforts of volunteers.
There were some interesting sidelights to the 3 Day competition:

The Chocolate Leg

At every State League/ National Championship event Gayle organisers the "chocolate leg". In
memory of friend and competitor Su Lin Weller, the CL winner is the fastest on a randomly selected leg on each day for the girls in that class. There is a lot of prestige associated with winning this- as well as chocolate!
This year the winners were Sandra Stewart day 1, Gayle Day 2 and Maria Day 3.

(The chocolates Gayle won were a real boost whilst stuck on the Hume on the way home)

Aldo- happy to see the finish.
The carefully selected Uringa base for Day 3.
